Nikon Coolpix 5000 Firmware 1.7- Update 10-OCT-2002 - RAW

For those of you who are thinking of going back to 1.6, wait until you discover the power of RAW! You can make a 1.7 image RAW image look better than both a 1.6 and 1.7 image. V1.7 (RAW) was shot in RAW mode after V1.7 and adjusted in Nikon Capture with the following toolpalette settings: Output curves (1,1.11,238), Color Balance (0,0,0,0,-2), Advanced RAW (exposure compensation +0.2 EV, unchanged, less contrast). This is certainly not meant to be a final or optimal setting and I will be trying out other settings in the coming days.

V1.7 (RAW)
The V1.7 (RAW) histogram is much better than the ones of V1.6 and V1.7. Compare the smooth transition from pure black (0) to the midtones with the steep "cliffs" of 1.6. and 1.7.
Note that the clipped highlights in the 1.7 shot are caused by the reflection of the sun on the window of the grey car which is absent in the other shots.
